Travel to Castle Point
If you’re planning a trip to London but would like to head a little further afield, Castle Point is a great option for exploring. Visit a few of the district’s landmarks before blagging a cheap car share to London
A historic location
Hadleigh Castle is an interesting landmark that’s well worth a visit. Now in ruins, it was built in 1215, and later fortified by Edward III – one of his reasons for doing so was to have a private residence still close to London. Take a trip to the castle today and you’ll be rewarded with great views over the Essex marshes.
Another historic spot to visit is Canvey Island. It’s been inhabited since the Roman invasion, and there have been plenty of excavations on the island. Visit The Lobster Smack
for a taste of more recent history – this popular pub was mentioned in the Dickens novel Great Expectations
Be sure to visit the rather unusual Dutch Cottage Museum, also based on Canvey Island. It was built in 1681 and became a museum in the sixties. It’s also tiny – fitting only around half a dozen people at a time. The Castle Point Transport Museum also makes for an interesting day out. Located in a disused bus depot, it’s home to over 30 old buses, coaches and other commercial vehicles.
Skate fans can head to Legacy XS in Benfleet
. There’s an indoor skate park, an art suite and a realistic laser tag game. If you prefer outdoor sports, you can use the free MUGA (multi-use games area). Play football, basketball, netball, hockey or cricket in a fully-enclosed, floodlit space.
