Spread across no less than three campuses, Derby University
is an award-winning educational hub which boasts over 28,000 students.
In addition to its main base on the outskirts of Derby city centre, the university also has campuses in the nearby towns of Buxton and Chesterfield. Regardless of which campus you’re looking to commute to, rest assured there are plenty of quick and affordable transport options on hand. Below is an overview of the best ways to commute to and from your campus.
How to get to Derby University
The main Derby campus is spread across four different sites, all within walking distance of each other on the east side of Markeaton Park. A free shuttle bus (route 4) runs between the sites throughout the day – you can find specific departure times here
Alternatively, the number 5 and 6 Unibus services regularly run between the city centre and all the main campuses. Fares are partly subsidised by the university and cost £1.70 per journey. The number 6 service also stops at the train station.
Local and national train services offer regular departures to and from Derby station, from where the campuses are a little over a ten minute bus journey away (use the number 6 Unibus service – departing from just outside the station).
Those travelling from further afield can follow signs for Derby from the M1, with the following postcodes applicable to your sat nav – depending on which part of the campus you’ll be visiting:
- Kedleston Road: De22 1GB
- Markeaton Street: DE22 3BD
- Britannia Mill: DE22 3BL
Grab yourself a local cycle map
(PDF link) and take advantage of the excellent bike parking sheds on campus – complete with excellent shower and locker facilities. Cycling is a healthy and cheap way of getting to campus, and once you know your way around, it may also prove handy when it comes to exploring everything Derby has to offer
Buxton and Chesterfield Campuses
The university offers a number of options for those wishing to travel to Buxton by bus. Check out the details here
Buxton station, meanwhile, is just a five minute walk from campus and can be reached from some of the biggest cities in the region, including Manchester and Sheffield.
If you’re travelling by car, simply pop the SK17 6RY campus postcode into your sat nav. Heading to Chesterfield Campus where the university’s nursing courses are based? The S41 7NA postcode will keep you on the right track.
Car share to and from Derby
Pay & display parking is available at the various campuses, so if you’re looking to cut down on your car costs, why not arrange a car share with friends or colleagues? You’ll be able to split the fuel bills too, not to mention enjoy each other’s company during the commute.
It’s the ideal way to travel further afield too, be it to the Chesterfield or Buxton Campus or perhaps just for a quick trip home during the weekend.
