Travel to Lancaster
Nestled on England's north-west coast, just a few miles south of the Lake District, the town of Lancaster enjoys a stunning location, complemented by a fascinating history which stretches back to the Roman era. Grab yourself a cheap car share and explore it for yourself!
Discover the ancient city
Lancaster Castle is the undoubted highlight of any visit to the city, with nearly 1,000 years of history lurking behind its imposing walls. It is formally under the ownership of none other than Her Majesty the Queen, and was up until a few years ago one of the longest serving prisons in Europe. This also happens to be where the famous Pendle Witches were sentenced to death in 1612.
Elsewhere, The Cottage Museum
is just a stone's throw away from the castle and enables you to step back in time for a true sense of what life was like back in the Victorian days. Set across five floors, you'll stumble across everything from housekeepers to old utensils.
A spot of nature
On a sunny day, there's no finer place to spend your afternoon than the sprawling 54 acre Williamson's Park, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the Lake District from a high vantage point. There's also a spectacular butterfly house nestled within the confines of the park, whilst festival and concerts are regularly staged here throughout the summer months.
Alternatively, find a spot along the banks of the Lancaster Canal – be it on a grassy embankment or at one of the eateries dotted along the waterfront. Tuck into some hearty pub food at the White Cross
, a canal side pub which boasts a wide selection of cask ales.
You'll find a wide range of restaurants throughout the city, with the Sultan of Lancaster
curry house a particular favourite with locals and visitors alike.
