Travel to Leicester

Leicester is located at the edge of the National Forest, and has an endless list of things to see and do. It is one of the oldest and largest cities in the UK, and is known for both its history and modern charms.

If you want to get to Leicester on the cheap, hop in a pocket-friendly car share from major cities like London, Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Nottingham and look forward to a fun trip.

History, science and technology

The city is well-known as a significant Roman settlement, and you can see the evidence at the Jewry Wall Museum. Discover the archaeology of the past, from prehistoric right up to medieval times. Entry is free, and the site houses one of the country’s tallest pieces of Roman masonry.

The Abbey Pumping Station is another popular museum. It sits opposite the National Space Centre, and together, these attractions explore over 200 years of science and technology. Expect exhibitions on light and optics, historic transport and public health, as well as detailed information about Leicester’s industrial and technological heritage.

Shops, strolling and food

There’s a wide variety of shopping spaces to see in Leicester, so you can while away hours treating yourself to some bargains. Highcross Leicester is perfect if you fancy killing a few birds with one stone. As well as being home to big brands like John Lewis, Zara and Apple, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat, with chains like Café Rouge and Handmade Burger Co on the menu.

For a more unique shopping experience, head to St Martin’s Square. You’ll find plenty of independent shops selling everything from clothes and beauty products to art and handcrafted jewellery. You can also grab some real Italian gelato here (and yes, free samples are available).

Once you’ve bagged a few bargains, take a stroll. There are lots of open spaces in Leicester that will make you forget you’re in such a big city. The main green spot is Abbey Park, and it’s placed just an hour north of the city centre. The River Soar runs right through it – on one side, you’ll find a Victorian-inspired area complete with decorative trees, foliage and lakes. On the other side, you’ll find the captivating remains of Leicester Abbey.
