Travel to Newport
A popular university and cathedral city in southeast Wales, Newport is steeped in history, as well as plenty of modern attractions. If you’re planning a trip there, why not look into catching a ride with Liftshare? It only takes around three hours get to London from Newport, and there are plenty of cities in between that you could catch a lift to as well – Bristol perhaps? Or Reading?
Exploring the city
There are plenty of shops to wander around in the pedestrianised city centre, as well as the popular Kingsway Centre, which is home to several high street favourites. Plan a visit to the indoor Newport Market too – the building dates back to 1854 and is quite a sight to behold, both inside and out. You’ll find two floors with over 100 stalls selling everything from local produce to clothing and handmade crafts. If you’re hungry for another architectural treat, don’t forget to take a look inside Newport Cathedral.
Uncover the past
History buffs should pay a visit to the Newport Museum and Art Gallery, which is actually housed in the Kingsway Centre. It’s been on the go since 1888, with displays that document the city’s past, from prehistoric times right up until the 20th century. Be sure to take a look at the Newport Medieval Ship while you’re there. It was discovered on the banks of the River Usk in June 2002, and new information about its history is still being uncovered. The art gallery, with its intriguing, permanent displays, is also worth a stroll.
You could also plan a trip to the National Roman Legion Museum
for a really fun day out. There are several exhibitions on throughout the year, but you can roll up any day of the week to learn all about the Roman army. The best part? Entry is free.
