Travel to Portsmouth

An island city with seafaring in its blood, Portsmouth has long been an important base for the Royal Navy. Nowadays it's also a brilliant destination for anyone interested in the history of ships and the military at sea, with the added bonus of great shopping, a lively nightlife and loads of visitor attractions.

A visit to Portsmouth doesn't have to be expensive, either – find yourself a car share to get there in the first place, and take advantage of the free museums and other activities to keep your trip well within budget. Here are some of the top things to see and do in Portsmouth:

A historic naval city

No trip to Portsmouth would be complete without a visit to the Historic Dockyard, home to several famous ships, including the HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar), the HMS Warrior (a cutting-edge 19th-century warship) and the Mary Rose (once Henry VIII's favourite ship). You can also check out a number of naval-themed museums, including the Royal Marines Museum and Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower.

For literary buffs, Portsmouth is also known as the birthplace of Charles Dickens – and you can now visit the Regency-era house in which he was born, furnished in a style which would have been familiar to the young Dickens.

Prefer to be outdoors? You can also get a sense of Portsmouth's longstanding relationship with the sea by embarking on a boat tour of the harbour (you may also get to see modern-day naval ships up close!) or simply strolling along the promenade, enjoying the fresh air. Head to the top of the sail-shaped Spinnaker Tower for breath-taking views over the entire area, or you could even consider a hovercraft trip across the water to the neighbouring Isle of Wight.

Portsmouth shopping and nightlife

As a bustling university city with a large, cosmopolitan student population, Portsmouth also boasts many excellent restaurants and pubs and some great entertainment venues. Check out the Gunwharf Quays complex for a wide selection of eating establishments, plus fabulous shopping opportunities in its many designer outlets. Or head to Portsmouth City Centre to find all your high street favourites within a stone's throw of each other, or Southsea Town Centre for smaller boutiques and independent shops.

When the sun goes down, catch some live music at one of Portsmouth's outstanding venues, such as The Cellars or the Wedgewood Rooms, or check out the latest theatre offerings at the Kings Theatre or New Theatre Royal.

Remember that even if you're simply commuting to Portsmouth from Southampton, Chichester, Brighton or London, you can still save money by arranging cheap travel through a lift share!
