Travel to Wakefield

A historic and picturesque city, Wakefield is a gem of West Yorkshire. A small city, it’s easy to explore on foot, and there’s something new waiting round every corner. There are castles, a historic city centre, diverse shopping scenes and a vibrant nightlife just waiting to be explored. Yorkshire is known for its friendly residents too, so you’ll feel welcome from the moment you arrive.

If you find a cheap car share, you can look forward to a trip that won’t break the bank. Whether you’re looking to travel to nearby locations such as Huddersfield, Leeds, Dewsbury and Birmingham, or a little further afield to London, Liftshare can give you affordable options for both one-off breaks and more regular commutes.

Strolling through the city

Wakefield Cathedral is a great starting point for exploring the city. Dating back to the 11th century, this historic building hosts regular music events and worship sessions, but you could also just pop in to witness the amazing architecture, or for a drink at the friendly coffee shop. Be sure to take a walk along the River Calder too for a moment of peace and quiet.

Next, head to Trinity Walk. This shopping district lies at the heart of Wakefield, and is home to over 60 great shops. You’ll find a great range of high street fashion; from brands such as H&M, New Look and River Island. There is also a great selection of fantastic places to eat, including the popular Handmade Burger Co. and Pizza Express.

Art, entertainment and nightlife

Wakefield is an artistic city, in more ways than one. Pay a visit to the Hepworth Art Gallery. Opened in 2011, it’s home to a wide variety of modern British art, from some of the 20th century’s leading artists. You can also spend an afternoon at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, an open-air gallery with work on display from both British and international artists.

Further to the creative arts, Wakefield boasts a vibrant nightlife. There’s a selection of restaurants serving dishes from around the globe, as well as a variety of shows at the Theatre Royal – a building that dates back to the 19th century. An array of cosy pubs, modern bars and affordable clubs live in the centre of Wakefield too – making it the perfect city for a budget night out. Be warned though, saving a few pennies on a lift share might mean you’re liable for getting the first round in…
